Our Front Page with Year 5
We love Mathematics in Year 5!
Year 5 has been very busy learning about all things 'maths' this year. Mathematics is a hands-on learning subject where various resources and concrete materials are used to support the thinking and reasoning of students. In Year 5, students showcase their mathematical skills through their Warm Ups, Rich Tasks and Reflections which enable them to be active and engaged thinkers who can relate their maths to everyday situations. Students love challenging themselves daily through the fun open-ended tasks provided and they especially love working with their peers.
Here is what some students in Year 5 had to say about maths:
“I like maths at school because it is a great challenge. I like how you learn maths so you can use it later in life.” Eamon Mccormack
“I like working with partners in maths because it’s fun and we can challenge each other.” Aleyah Frith
“Maths is super fun in Year 5 because we learn lots of different and new things.” Savannah Durrant
“I definitely love learning maths because it is knowledge for the future and it can come in handy. I like the rich tasks because they are challenging, and fun to work out the answer using different strategies.” Talei Gill-Navatu
“I like maths because it is challenging.” Zhepplin Fear
“I like working out multiplication, division, addition and subtraction problems because it’s lots of fun and I work hard.” Rachel Ellis

Our Gospel Reflection
In our Gospel Reading this Sunday from Luke, Jesus answers a question from some Sadducees about the resurrection of the dead.
Children in our culture often know very little about death, dying, and eternal life. Take this opportunity to talk with your children about their thoughts, beliefs, maybe even their fears, about death and dying.
In the Gospel this week, Jesus tells us that after we die, we will not need the same things we did when we were alive, but we will continue to have a relationship with God. You could use the example of a tree to help your children understand what Jesus tells us. When a tree is alive it needs water, soil, and sunlight. When the tree is used to make a table, a toy, or something else it has a new purpose. The tree no longer needs water, soil, or sunlight. Read together the short form of the Gospel, Luke 20:27, 34-38. Tell your children about your hope and faith in the resurrection of the body and eternal life with God. Pray together for those in your family who have died and are now in heaven with God.
From Our Principal
Yesterday was the 1st of November and as a Catholic community we celebrated as a school the Feast of All Saints. Every year the Church recalls the example, witness, and prayer of the holy women and men who have been identified by the Church as saints. These saints are more than just role models; they are family members with whom we continue to share relationships, in a bond of prayer, called the Communion of Saints. Every year when we celebrate this day, the Gospel we proclaim recalls for us Jesus' teaching about happiness, the Beatitudes. We quickly note in this reading that none of those Jesus named as “blessed” or “happy” are expected . . . the poor in spirit, the meek, the persecuted. Jesus' blueprint for happiness reflects little of what the world might call happiness.
The Beatitudes can be understood as a framework for Christian living. Because of this, it is natural that we proclaim this Gospel on the Feast of All Saints. Saints are people who lived the spirit of the Beatitudes as Jesus lived. On this day, we too are challenged to model our lives on the spirit and promises of the Beatitudes.
Visiting Schools
Over the next couple of weeks, our school will have many visitors from other schools who will be here to observe some of the wonderful work that is happening at St Brigid's. For our staff, we see this as our daily work but the more we hear from others around our Diocese, the more we are affirmed of the way in which we support student learning. Last term we had visiting school principals and other leaders observe our student's work in writing. This week we will be hosting principals from the Richmond zone and Catholic Schools Office personnel and next week we will have representatives from St Joseph's Alstonville observing the use of iPads in the Kindergarten to Year 2 classes. In the coming weeks, we will also be hosting further visits of staff from Alstonville and Our Lady Help of Christians, South Lismore. As I said, these visits are so affirming for our staff in the great work that they are doing for the students of our school.
Kindergarten Interviews
Over the past weeks and especially last week, it has been wonderful meeting and talking with parents and their children who will be commencing Kindergarten at St Brigid's in 2023. One of the most pleasing things to hear is how many positive comments they have heard from other members of our school community about many aspects of our school. This is due to all members of our school community working together to ensure we provide the best possible learning experiences for the students of St Brigid's. Our new Kindergarten students are having a wonderful time transitioning to "big" school and they are being given an excellent example by the current students of St Brigid's.
Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead,
Tony Hunter
Family Fun Night
At the last Parent Forum Meeting it was decided to have a Family Fun Night at Kyogle Pool on Thursday 17th of November from 5pm to 7pm. There will be a big inflatable slide in the pool and a sausage sizzle going all the time. Families are invited to come down and spend the evening with other families from our St Brigid's community. The inflatable slide will be open to the public until 6pm and then from 6pm to 7pm it is for the exclusive use of St Brigid's families only. This should be a fun social evening for all. The only cost is to get into the pool. A reminder that glass bottles are not permitted into the pool grounds, only plastic containers and cans. Please also note that the supervision of children is the responsibility of parents and carers. Looking forward to seeing as many families as possible on the 17th.
Working Bee
We are looking for approximately 6 to 7 people to assist in moving the garden beds from behind our Kindergarten room this Friday after school. Our groundsman Dean Barsby would be very appreciative of any help and being a Friday afternoon, who knows what surprises might appear to cool things down after our work. If you are able to assist please bring your gloves and shovels to make things a little easier. Many thanks for your anticipated support.
Crazy Sock and Hair Day
CRAZY SOCK & HAIR DAY—Tuesday 8th November
Students are invited to wear Crazy Socks and/or Crazy Hair to raise money for the Catholic Mission and participate in ‘Sock Activities’ during lunchtime on this day. Crazy Sock and Hair Day is an initiative of Catholic Mission and one way in which our school can fundraise and engage in advocacy and formation activities for Catholic Mission. We ask that students bring along a gold coin on the day to support this initiative. We look forward to seeing all your CRAZY SOCKS AND HAIR next Tuesday!
Year 4 Camp to Tallebudgera
Next week Year 4 will be travelling to Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast for their first ever school camp! They will be accompanied by Mr Hunter, Mrs Esslemont and Mrs Aherne for a three day action packed adventure. The students will take part in activities such as archery, bodyboarding and orienteering, as well as team building activities throughout the course of their stay. We are all very excited and looking forward to sharing our experiences with our school community when we return.
Compass Tips/Tricks
Compass Canteen - Thank you to the majority of families who ordered online last Monday. There were a couple of hiccups, but fingers crossed these have been resolved. You will notice we have also created a Recess component of online ordering. It can be a little tricky to get the two separate orders, but the flowchart below will hopefully assist.
Canteen Orders: Monday Recess - Add item/s to cart - View Cart (If you don't view cart and just use back button, it does not seem to create the order in Recess)- Create another order - Monday Lunch - Add Item/s to cart - Proceed to Checkout.
Compass Credit - If you have had to cancel a canteen order - the amount can not be refunded to your card, but stays within your compass wallet. When you go to pay on the next occasion, where your credit card details appear, use the drop-down arrow, which should bring up 'Compass Credit' and the available amount. If this doesn't appear and you know you should have credit, please contact the Office.
To enter a student absence or pay for an event - go to the home screen and press the shortcuts button (the + symbol at the bottom).
Sport Swimming Event - Thank you to those who have provided their season pass details. Some still need to consent through the app. Please check.
Year Book Magazine Cover Competition
It is getting closer to the time when our 2022 Year Book will be released. Once again there is a competition for students to design the front and back cover of the Year Book with great prizes to be won. We encourage all of our students to put their artistic flair into full swing and get their entries into the office. All entries are to be on a piece of A4 paper with their name on the back of the entry, please. Three green tickets will be issued for entries received. Entries need to be in at the school office by Tuesday 15th of November.
