Front Page with Year 5
Year 5 have been busy getting a "sweaty brain" over the past seven weeks as they focus on selecting and justifying efficient strategies when solving mathematical problems. Our budding Mathematicians have been experimenting with place value, estimation, rounding, long addition and subtraction, constant difference and leveling strategies- just to name a few! It's been challenging but always a lot of fun.

Our Gospel Reflection

Luke 15:1-3 Parable of the Prodigal Son
In the Gospel on Sunday, the Parable of the prodigal Son is shared. We reflect as it shows us that ‘God always forgives. We are the ones who tire of asking for forgiveness.’ What the prodigal son’s Father shows us is God’s boundless mercy.
But on the other hand, the parable also shows how easily we humans can slip into what the Pope calls ‘the indignation of the elder son’. If we do not see God as our merciful Father, then we can easily fall into ‘living a distant religion, made of prohibitions and duties.’ When we judge and exclude, we try to limit God’s mercy.
Falling into that mindset, we lose sight of our relatedness. We can become like the resentful elder son who calls his own brother ‘this son of yours’.
To combat this mindset of ‘rigidity towards our neighbour’ the Pope suggests that, like the Father, we ‘make merry and rejoice’. We should try to ‘demonstrate our closeness to those who repent or who are on the way, to those who are in crisis or who are far away … we have to offer them a warm welcome that encourages them to go ahead.’
In our lives, we should always treat others without judgment. And in our churches, we should always warmly welcome them home.
From Our Acting Principal

On Monday the 24th of March, the staff of St Brigid's joined with the staff of Our Lady Help of Christians, South Lismore to work with Dr Dan White from Sydney. Dan is very well known throughout the educational environment for his work as the former Director of Schools for the Archdiocese of Sydney and the Archdiocese of Hobart. He is the author of 8 books that focus on pedagogy within the RE Classroom.
Dan's presentation immersed all those involved on a journey of reflection through Catholic Pedagogy, Pedagogy of Prayer and the Seven Characteristics of Jesus as to the true purpose of a Catholic school that acknowledges all participants, students, staff and families. It was a great day of learning, collaboration and exploring!!
Cross Country
The weather was kind to us last week, allowing us to hold our school cross country. It was lovely to see so many visitors to our school watching and cheering on our students. A big thank you to Mrs Hayley Catlin and the teachers for the work that went into rescheduling this event. Congratulations to all participating students and particularly those who received age champions and runners up. I wish the students who are progressing to the zone carnival on Friday, all the very best!
Family Mass
I extend an invitation to all families to attend our Family Parish Mass on Sunday 30th March at 9am. Our Year 4 students will also be receiving their First Eucahrist at this family Mass. This is a wonderful time to come together as a school community and celebrate alongside our students. Everyone is welcome to morning tea after Mass.
Showcase
Year 1 are super excited to be presenting the first showcase of the year on Friday March 28th at 2.30pm. All families are invited to this assembly which will be held in the hall.
School Photos
School Photo Day is always an exciting time which will be held on Thursday 3rd April. Many thanks to all families who have returned their photo envelopes. Any family who would like a sibling photo, can collect a sibling envelope from the front office prior to the day. All students are to be in full school uniform and this includes black shoes as per our uniform policy.

Many thanks to all those families who have already submitted an application for their child to attend this year's Ready4Learning which will commence on Friday 2nd May. Due to the success of this program, the numbers will be capped. Priority will be given to families who already have children enrolled at St Brigid's and to families who are looking at having their child start Kindergarten in 2025 at St Brigid's. If you know of anyone who has a child ready to start school next year and they haven't lodged an application please let them know ASAP. Letters confirming acceptance into our 2025 version of R4L will be sent out to families prior to the end of this term.
Pupil Free Day
St Brigid’s will be hosting their Annual Flower and Foliage Spectacular on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th April in the Parish Hall. Please note as previously advertised that FRIDAY 11th will be a Pupil Free Day at St. Brigid’s to accommodate for this event. Staff will be onsite but involved in a Professional Learning Day on curriculum.

Our School Communuity Forum will be providing catering for both days and going by the attendances last year we are expecting another huge gathering of gardening enthusiasts from all over the region. Lauren Schottelius is seeking people who can provide ingredients such as strawberry jam, thickened cream, eggs along with baking such as slices, biscuits or cupcakes. It would be greatly appreciated if parents would be able to give an hour or two to assist on either day with serving. Please contact Lauren on 0414640431 if you are able to assist with either donation of goods or donation of time to assist in the canteen. Further reminders will be called in the coming weeks. Sign up using our volunteer form here.
The Foliage Spectacular will commence at 9am on Friday and 8am on Saturday. All donations could be dropped off at the Parish Hall at any time.
Have a wonderful week!
Vanessa Walters,
Acting Principal.

Focused Classrooms
During Term 1, staff have been collaborating regularly to learn about the new research on Focused Classrooms from the Australian Education Research Organisation. This research identifies four evidence based practices for Focused Classrooms:
- Establish a system of rules and routines from day one. Students should have predictability and structure that provide them with certainty about what is expected.
- Explicitly teach and model appropriate behaviour. Students need to know how to perform the roles expected of them.
- Hold all students to high standards. Students should feel valued and supported in their learning and know that they are capable of achieving their learning goals.
- Actively engage students in their learning. Students should be encouraged to actively participate.
As a result of this initial learning, observations of student learning and wellbeing, and reflection on current school processes several aspects were identified as key foundations to the success of a Focused Classroom, which we have been developing this term.
PBS Expectations
Teachers have been working alongside their students to gather student voice on the classroom expectations that establish a focused classroom. The students ideas have then been collated for staff to reflect on and review the current PBS expectations at St Brigid’s. As a result of this work the PBS team (a small group of staff) are in the processes of finalising the PBS Behaviour Matrix for 2025, so that we have a whole school shared understanding of the expectations across St Brigid’s in all the SERS - Safety, Effort, Respect and Self Responsibility. Once finalised, we will share this with families so that you are able to support your child with understanding the SERS at St Brigid’s.
We will continue to keep you updated as we progress in this work, towards focused classrooms.

Zones of Regulation
Zones of Regulation are an empowering instructional tool to build safe, supportive environments that foster learning and well-being for all. Learners benefit from:
- Increased self-awareness and social and emotional skills
- A common language for communication, problem solving, and emotional understanding
- More time spent on learning instead of on behavior management
- A healthier, more inclusive school climate
Staff engaged our students to co-develop a whole school Zones of Regulation Poster to build shared understanding of the zones and identify practical actions that staff and students can use to self-regulate their emotions both on the playground and in the classroom. You will see this poster around the school and in the classrooms and may even be something you would like to use at home.
Warm regards,
Samantha Lynch,
Assistant Principal – Learning and Teaching

Family Parish Mass
This Sunday the 30th is a very special celebration as we will also have some students in year 4 who will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. In addition to the Mass, there will be the opportunity for the children to take part in their own Children's Liturgy guided by our classroom teachers. After Mass all are invited to share in morning tea and catch up with members of our Parish community.

We are once again holding a giant Easter raffle to raise funds for Project Compassion during Lent. Students can bring in an item to donate towards the raffle, a small egg, bunny or anything Easter related is appreciated. We hope to have HEAPS of prizes for students. Tickets are on sale for $1 each or 3 for $2. Thank you for your support. The raffle will be drawn at our Holy Week liturgy on Thursday, the 10th of April at 2pm.
Holy Week Liturgy
On Thursday, the 10th of April, we will be holding a Liturgy in the Church to remember Holy Week. The liturgy will begin at 2pm and all classes will be involved. All are welcome to attend.

Making Jesus Real (MJR)

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning (PB4L)

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) at St Brigid’s
At St Brigid’s, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all students. As part of this commitment, we continue to refine and strengthen our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework across the school.
This term, we’ve been working closely with both students and staff to review and update our PBS Matrix — the document that outlines the behaviours we expect to see in all areas of school life. We believe that for PBS to be meaningful and effective, it’s essential that our whole school community has a voice in shaping it. That’s why we’ve gathered student and teacher feedback about what safe, effort, respect, self responsible behaviours look like in different areas of the school — from the playground to the classroom, and everywhere in between.
We’re excited to share that we have also formed a new PBS Team made up of dedicated staff members who will lead this important work moving forward. Their role will be to review the feedback we’ve received, finalise the Matrix, and share it with the wider school community. This team will also continue to monitor and promote positive behaviour throughout the year.
Our PBS approach is about more than just rules — it’s about building a positive culture where every student knows what is expected and feels supported to make good choices. We look forward to sharing our updated Matrix soon and continuing to work in partnership with our families to support the growth and wellbeing of every child at St Brigid’s.
Thank you for your continued support.
Wellbeing Team
Have A Go, Do your Best, Don’t Give Up !!!
This week's focus is "We have a go, do our best, and don't give up!" is rooted in resilience, determination, and a growth-oriented attitude. It’s a powerful approach that can be tied to both mental and physical wellbeing. The St Brigid’s students displayed this last week in their cross country carnival - YAY team!! Below are the ways in which it supports overall wellbeing:
- Building Resilience:
This is the ability to recover from setbacks and continue moving forward, even when faced with challenges. It reinforces the belief that challenges are opportunities for growth, not insurmountable obstacles. - Growth Mindset:
A growth mindset encourages the belief that abilities can improve through effort and perseverance. By committing to “doing your best” and “not giving up,” you're constantly pushing yourself to evolve, which leads to increased self-confidence and personal satisfaction. - Emotional Wellbeing:
The simple act of trying and putting in effort is often enough to boost positive emotions. When you see yourself putting in effort, no matter the outcome, it can foster a sense of accomplishment and over time, this approach can help reduce feelings of helplessness, promoting a more positive self-view and improved emotional regulation. - Improved Motivation:
By adopting the mindset of not giving up, you encourage persistence and long-term motivation. This is important because staying motivated, even when the going gets tough, helps you continue to work toward your goals.
Motivation and focus are tied to increased energy levels, positive habits, and a sense of purpose—all of which support mental and physical health. - Physical Wellbeing:
While it’s primarily a mental approach, persistence and effort often translate into physical wellbeing. For example, the mindset of pushing through challenges can extend to exercise or adopting a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity itself has been proven to boost mood and reduce stress, supporting overall mental health. - Stress Reduction:
By focusing on giving your best and not giving up, you shift the focus away from perfectionism. You stop stressing over outcomes and instead emphasize effort, which can reduce anxiety and stress. - Social and Community Benefits:
Taking this mindset into group settings or teams, helps foster an encouraging, supportive environment. Encouraging each other to do your best and persist strengthens relationships and creates a community of resilience.
Positive group dynamics help reduce isolation, promote connection, and can enhance feelings of belonging—all key components of social wellbeing.
This idea of "having a go, doing your best, and not giving up" prioritises effort, perseverance, growth, and resilience. It is transformative, not just for personal goals but for relationships and physical health as well. If you would like more information on any of the above key points please do not hesitate to contact me.
